First Impression: Based on  the title, I think the essay talks about how Facebook is a media company, what kind of media company Facebook is, and describes more of what a media company should be.

Quote: “You can not believe everything you see on the internet.”

Reflection:

If Facebook does not want to be termed as a media company, then why does it show up on Google that Facebook is a social media and social networking company? The definition of social media is “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content”. While on the other hand, a tech company is “A technology company is a type of business entity that focuses primarily on the development and manufacturing of technology products, or providing technology as a service”. By looking at the definition of the two kinds of companies, we can say that Facebook is more on the social media side in terms of its platform but as a whole I consider it a tech company. On the other hand, it somehow does sound odd when most of the people in the company are engineers and computer scientists while being termed as a media company rather than a tech company, it does sound degrading for the workers. If Facebook were a social media company, then most of the information being posted on our news feeds must be one hundred percent accurate.

5 Things That I’ve Learned

  1. Even though the company does not hire Journalists, does not mean that it is not a social media company.

  2. It is up to us if we want to believe in fake news or not.

  3. Facebook is not a social media company, but a platform.

  4. Using a wrong term for a company may be considered an insult.

  5. A tech company is different from a media company.

5 Integrative Questions

  1. Why are we making such a big deal out of this?

  2. How do you determine fake news from real news?

  3. Is social media considered a relevant area to take in information?

  4. Why is a Chief Ethics Officer important to a company?

  5. What makes Facebook say that it is a tech company and not a media company?
