First Impressions: The essay probably talks about how the attitude of purchasing Twitter and Facebook followers is unhealthy for these platforms since it is not the right way of using it.

Quote: “You can’t buy real followers. They come to you.”

Reflection:

There was a time where followers on social media did not mean anything. Still, as time went by, it became a symbol of popularity and credibility. The more followers you have, the more likely it is that you are someone that people can trust. Some people abuse Twitter's system and different things such as follower bots to boost the follower count of an account. Still, if one wants to increase his followers through the use of follower bots, he would have to pay first. I have seen websites that offer these kinds of services and tried it myself to see if it is real. There were different kinds of services, from Facebook followers, Instagram Likes and Followers, Twitter followers, Twitch Followers and views, and many more. The cost of one thousand followers is somewhere near half a dollar, yes it is very cheap. Once I received the followers, it was obviously fake, and I do not think people will use this service. There are also some videos on the internet advocating the use of following bots services, saying that it is "okay" because it is a good start for your career as an online star. I think that purchasing followers do not help your online community at all since you do not personally know the people who follow you. They are usually just bots that follow you, and that's it. It would be better to know your community and grow as a community so that you avoid the chances of being accused of purchasing followers.

5 Things I Learned

  1. I learned that there are people who hand-select websites and blogs to place advertisements.

  2. I learned that by buying followers, you are not able to create a health community for your social media.

  3. I learned that people who have many followers does not guarantee that they provide good content.

  4. I learned that if everyone found out that they can purchase followers, they will be abusing it and Twitter will not be what it was made to be.

  5. I learned that people who work on Twitter takes time to curate so that they are able to check the credibility of the account before verifying it.

5 Integrative Questions

  1. Is it ethical to buy followers even though you already have more than 1000?

  2. How do we verify if a social media account bought its followers?

  3. How does targeted and untargeted followers affect a social media account?

  4. There are famous artists that buy followers for their Instagram accounts, also spam comments to make their posts look like it had many interactions. Are these actions ethical for their career?

  5. Does buying followers on social media help grow a person’s community online?
