First Impressions: The essay probably talks about the current situation of data in different countries, such as the recent news of America having power to see whatever you browse online.

Quote: “Why are US and EU laws so different?”

Reflection:

When browsing the internet, we visit different websites looking for something we need. We just look it up on Google and click on the first result that comes out. Once we get what we need, we leave the website and proceed to browsing other websites, not knowing what we leave or what is taken from us. A few minutes later, we see advertisements related to what we recently browsed online, and we ask ourselves, “Is there someone watching me as I browse the web?”. Some may know what is happening behind the scenes, but non-technical people do not. What people do not know is that as we browse the internet daily, our actions are being carefully monitored by something like an algorithm. It follows what you search on the web, and decides what to show to you the next time you browse the internet. People tend to be afraid of these things since they do not know what else is being monitored, so they stop browsing the internet so that their data would not be seen. People should be taught how to handle their data carefully and find out the different tools that they can use to prevent this from happening. If they do not want to learn these tools since it can be a waste of time, then they should be updated with the current news and events that revolve around data privacy and security. I have seen different news that talks about data breaches, more than a million login credentials leaked, and different companies not being sure of the quality of their security. So if these things happen often, people , including me, should look out for ourselves.

5 Things I Learned

  1. In the U.S. privacy is an inalienable right, but invasion of such privacy is defined sector-by-sector and case-by-case.

  2. In the EU, something is private unless declared otherwise.

  3. In the U.S. citizens can and do challenge data protection breaches, but national security interests may prevail as a general rule.

  4. EU citizens can mount legal challenges to privacy violations wherever they occur.

  5. EU has a “Right to be forgotten” campaign against Google.

5 Integrative Questions

  1. Should other countries also have campaigns similar to the EU's “Right to be forgotten” campaign?

  2. How can we compare with one another how private our data is?

  3. Should we continue using familiar systems that have experienced data breaches, or should we stop and seek for alternatives?

  4. What does a company do when experiencing their data being breached?

  5. Why are laws of US and EU different in terms of technology?
